Nigel LowreyRol's new comic is now out and I have to say it's a humdinger.
Set in the northern town of Fathomsby, where there is something not quite right around every cobbled street corner, TMSAV introduces us to a rag tag bunch of residents, all of whom are not quite what they seem. Monster movie DJs run the local radio station, the derelict pier is owned by the local gangster who's missus is bit weird and a bit friendly with the gents of the town and the new cop in town is possibly the only one who's not corrupt. Add in two mysteries and some other nutters, freaks and odd bods and you get the gist. Think Psychoville and League of Gentleman and you've kind of got the idea
Andrew Cheverton TMSAV is drawn by a plethora of artists all who do a character each. The art team from The Jock, Hirsts debut small press book,Nigel Lowrey and Adrian Bamforth are joined by Paul Rainey (There's No Time Like The Present, Book of Lists), Martin Eden (Spandex, The O Men), Andrew Cheverton (West, The Girly Comic), Rob Wells (Crisp Biscuit Comics),Kelvin Green (Pjang) and Mark Renhard on the first issue. I thought at first the distinctive styles may clash, but the world of Fathomsby is so well realised that the different artists just add to the character of each protaganist. Some you'll love, some you'll hate and some will will just make your spine shudder.

I have to declare my bias for this book as I letter, design and do production work on it, and have drawn 3 pages for issue 2, but I don't care as it's excellent. I have worked on Rol's comics for over 15 years and TMSAV is one of the strongest pieces he's written, with the balance between plots (and there's several of them here) and character set just right along with an intriguing sense of mystery, humour, fear and general unease. You can buy it here for £2.50 inc p&p for a print copy or 99p for pdf download
